In what ended up being a family affair at Collie Golf Club, the brothers traded blows before Michael edged away from two-time winner Greg late in the final round on Sunday afternoon with a one-under par 71. This gave him a two-round total of 144, four better than Greg’s 148, and victory in the 48th running of the event.
The winner’s second 18 was the only below par round of the weekend and emphatically put paid to those who harboured visions of Riverside glory after a relatively close opening round on Saturday.
After Saturday’s round Greg Golinski held a one-shot lead over his younger brother and three better than Gosnells player Michael Laws and Bunbury’s Danny Ennor.
The Golinski brothers now play their golf at Lake Karrinyup (Michael) and Bunbury (Greg) but both have fond memories of their early days in the sport and time spent with their father, Marek, on the Collie course. They are regular participants in the club’s major events.
Final gross placings: Michael Golinski 73-71-144; Greg Golinski 72-76-148; Michael Laws 75-79-154; Danny Ennor 75-82-157.

The 36-hole nett event was won by Mandurah’s Greg Tuckey on a countback from West Aviat’s Peter Cooper after both had finished on 143. Both had rounds of 69 and 74 with the winner posting 69 on Sunday. Collie players Clayton Flynn (144) and Regan Old (148) were third and fourth respectively with popular Pinjarra visitor Dennis Annandale fifth on 149.

Saturday and Sunday nett winners were Shayne Boothey (Narrogin) and Jim Larsen (Collie) respectively. Boothey had 70 nett on Saturday and Larsen 71 nett on Sunday. Runner-up on Saturday, on a countback, and also on 70 was local player Danny Clayton, while Narrogin’s Raf Corrasaniti had 72 to be runner-up in the second round.
FRIDAY’S four-ball-best-ball par, sponsored by Ash Stewart’s Henderson Hardware, attracted a good field of 108 players and ended with two combinations locked together on plus nine.
Top spot, on a countback, went to Fred Bronickis and Chris Bliss who edged out another local combination of Steven Ireland and Colin Naysmith.
Joel Simmonds and Jason Mumme took third on a countback from three other pairs who all finished on plus eight: David Laird/Clayton Flynn, Jim Hine/Kalev Kutt and Ron Annandale/Eric Annandale.

George Newlands (No. 4), Gary Old (9), Colin Giblett (14) and Fred Bronickis (18) won the novelties.
FIFTY-TWO players made the most of the immaculately prepared course on the day prior to the Riverside Open in last Thursday’s nine-hole scroungers.
Bruce Miller won the event on a spin-of-the-wheel from Terry Reeves after they had both posted 19.
Reeves, at the expense of another scroungers handicap stroke, took gross honours with 41 off-the-stick.
Neil McDonald was third, with 18, followed by Ron Annandale, Rodney Simmonds, Peter Ellery and Rob Cavanagh on 17.
Novelties went to: Neil McDonald No. 4, Frank Battista (6), John Michalak (9).
