Is there anyone out there in Bunbury who, like me, is concerned about the current proposal by our council for Jaycee Park?
Have you seen the proposed development map on the website?
This is a neighbourhood park on Forrest Avenue and is currently at risk of being turned into a massive office space for not-for-profit organisations and a parking area for 194 cars.
The existing park will shrink into a small area of grass and a few trees – no space to kick a footie. Of the three ‘playgrounds’ shown, two appear to be attachments to offices and therefore private. The proposed size does not take into account that the ‘park’ is now split up and hemmed by offices.
My question is “why is our council preparing to rezone this area which must already be designated for passive recreation without prior consultation with ratepayers?”
Since 1969 I have witnessed its use by nearby residents of Wollaston and Carey Park, as well as visitors and other members of the community.
This little gem seems to have a plethora of uses. People of all ages walk their dogs there during the day; family groups meet for special occasions; mums and kids play there and meetings occur involving medieval knights.
Its accessibility to the railway station is a bonus for visitors and local workers who appreciate the calming influence of native trees and fresh air.
Despite neglect and the onslaught of past tornadoes and storms, it is a native bird site, especially in the early evenings when I have seen various estuary birds feeding there.
If this proposal were to be adopted, the area would become just another concrete jungle and lower the impact of Forrest Avenue which is still an important entry into the City centre.
