PLANS for Bunbury’s marina and commercial hub are a step closer to reality after the release of the concept plan at Thursday's public meeting.
The marine facilities steering committee, chaired by Bunbury MLA John Castrilli and facilitated by the South West Development Commission, delivered a concept plan detailing a $10 million boost to the local economy with marine pens in the city increasing to 500.
If funding is secured the project is expected to create an initial 90 jobs and would allow local boat owners and tourists to moor safely in the city, with flow on effects for marine maintenance, hospitality and fishing charters.
The plan includes provisions for a Fremantle-style wharf with restaurants and other commercial buildings, a modern boat-lifting facility and an expanded power and trailer boat landing facility.
South West Development Commission chief executive Don Punch said the project would establish a viable marine industry in Bunbury which would be a commercial and tourism hub.
“It is not just about creating facilities for boat owners but developing infrastructure for the whole community with an emphasis on open public space,” he said.
“When Marlston Hill was developed, it changed the way people viewed Bunbury – this is the next phase of changing public perception.”
Bunbury MLA John Castrilli said currently Bunbury was WA’s only regional city without a marina.
He said boat owners were forced to moor in Mandurah or Busselton, which meant Bunbury was losing the flow-on financial benefits to its neighbours.
The steering committee is in discussions with the state government about securing $1 million for environmental approvals before a business plan is developed and the project is costed.
The committee is now taking feedback for 21 days, with the concept to be redefined along public reactions.
