COMMUNITY outcry over the future of the Koombana Bay footbridge will see a committee formed to work out the best solution for everyone involved.

Bunbury woman Holly Lange met with City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan yesterday to discuss the importance of the closed bridge to the public after she gained the backing of more than 430 residents on Facebook.
The Public Transport Authority closed the footbridge in August last year for maintenance works and a structural assessment found it did not meet current safety standards.
Mrs Lange said the bridge had been a safe passage for her daily travels around the Leschenault Inlet and the alternative roadside path posed both difficulty and danger.
She said the traffic bridge path was regularly littered with broken glass, it was too steep for disabled people and she had seen young children run onto busy Koombana Drive while walking with their parents.
Mayor Gary Brennan told Mrs Lange that a committee would be formed to work out the best solution, including representatives from the City of Bunbury, the state government, local businesses and the community.
Mrs Lange’s Facebook page, called “Reopen Koombana Footbridge”, will be used as a call to action to find ways to support and finance the project.
“With the member for Bunbury’s support, as the footbridge is a state government asset, I am hopeful we can secure a solution,” Mayor Brennan said.
“In the meantime I urge all pedestrians and cyclists using the alternatives to exercise caution.”
The first meeting of the Koombana footbridge committee will be held on January 31.
