AN OVERHAUL to one of Bunbury’s oldest shopping centres could see the area become the local version of Mount Lawley’s Beaufort Street, according to Mayor Gary Brennan.
The City of Bunbury has met with the owners of the Plaza Shopping Centre who are keen to fund a substantial renovation including a revamp and expansion of retail space.
Mayor Brennan said the centre was more than 40 years old and was due for a major makeover.
“Initially it would be another demonstration of confidence by major landowners and retail chains in our city’s growth and potential,” he said.
“With an expansion of retail floor space it is likely to generate further employment and possibly more demand for regionally-sourced foods.”
Mayor Brennan said the project could encourage other landowners close by to renovate or redevelop their properties.
“For example the redevelopment and major renovations undertaken by Woolworths at the Highway Hotel combined with the potential redevelopment of the Plaza would be a major stimulus for the Highway corner precinct.”
Since a new council was elected in October last year, Mayor Brennan said there had been a focus on being proactive with respect to development.
“Recent decisions by council relating to building heights and mix of use have sent a positive message to our commercial land owners and prospective developers that we are intent on meeting the market,” he said.
“With some creativity and energy combined with investment money perhaps we can create Bunbury’s version of Oxford St Leederville or the Beaufort Street hospitality and retail strip of Mount Lawley.”
