FITNESS COMPETITION: There is a lot more to a fitness competition than a lot of time in the gym and a good spray tan.
According to Bunbury’s “Iron Maiden” Jassy Chia, judges have an eagle eye for overall presentation, symmetry, stage persona and confidence.
Fronting up at the 2014 International Natural Bodybuilding Association WA Supershow in Perth on the weekend, Chia knew she was up against some tough competition.
“I’ve entered a couple of comps before and generally you see a few stand-outs and you can pick who is going to be in the top three, but this time I had no idea – some girls were super lean, some had rock-hard abs, some had amazing backs,” she said.
“In the fitness model division the judge is looking for the entire package, your persona on stage, how you pose and eye contact.”
Chia obviously had the goods because she came away with first place in the Miss Fitness Open Class and Miss Fitness Momma and was named overall champion for the competition.
Bunbury enjoyed more success when Karen Crofts placed first in the novice figure division and second overall.
Chia said the lead-up to the competition was all about listening to her body and tweaking her training and diet to get the best results.
Bunbury gym Vamp Fit, where Chia is a personal trainer, has just become a sponsor for her future competitions.
The mother-of-two said her job often overlapped into counselling as well as fitness training.
“I work hard to find the source of the problem why someone is unfit or overweight – often it has a lot to do with confidence,” she said.
“I find what motivates that person and help them make realistic and achievable goals.”
