THE science staff at Bunbury Catholic College have been recognised for their efforts to ensure local students get a firm grip on the subject.
The school have been presented with a Catholic Education Office LEAD award for excellence for their primary school science initiative.
Head of science Annabel Kanakis came up with a plan a few years ago to ensure students were introduced to science before they arrived at high school.
“When I was teaching a Year 8 class the students were from several different feeder schools and while some had been taught science, many had not,” she said.
Working with local primary schools, the Bunbury Catholic College staff created science ‘tool boxes’ of equipment with activities for primary teachers to use.
At the end of each topic the boxes are returned to the College where they are restocked and sent on to the next school.
“This program benefits the primary schools by giving them access to resources and then when the students come to us they all have the same knowledge,” Mrs Kan- akis said.
Along with the award the school received $4,000 to put towards resources for the science department.
