CRICKET: Colts Cricket Club moved to a 3-1 record in the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association season after a prolific display with the bat from captain Clayton Caltsounis saw them conquer Marist on Saturday.
Caltsounis notched the league’s highest score this season with an unbeaten 121 runs from 115 bowls, single-handedly putting his side in a strong position to win the game.
Marist won the toss and sent Colts in to bat first.
Things were looking good for the fielding side in the initial stages of the match with four early wickets dismantling Colts’ top order.
With Colts sitting on the score of 4/39 it seemed that Marist was set to run away with the match, but Caltsounis put forth an electric innings for his side.
With help from Stuart Boyle (19 runs) and Deon Attard (21), Caltsounis was able to get his side to the score of 9/215 at the end of the innings.
Shaun Bulman was effective with the ball in hand for Marist taking the figures of 2/13 from 10 overs, which included three maidens.
Marist began their chase of 216 for the win steadily with opener Matt Foreman posting 59 runs.
But when the wicket of Corey Fitt (10) fell, Marist began to collapse.
Reece O’Connell (0), Paul Reynolds (8), Shane Cristaldi (4) and Adam Spinelli (9) were all dismissed for single figure totals as Marist found themselves in a hole.
Late contributions from Matt Anderson (20) and Wayne Murphy (23) gave Marist a late push but it was too little too late as the side finished with the score of 9/161.
Attard was Colts’ best bowler with the figures of 3/23 from 10 overs with four maiden overs.
Colts will now head into the bye week while Marist, who now maintain a 2-1 record, will come up against the 0-3-1 Leschenault Green Caps.
Collie defeat Leschenault
Despite a century from batsman Tom Buchanan, Leschenault couldn’t post its first win of the season going down to Collie in a bottom of the table clash.
Buchanan put up 105 runs from 99 balls but received minimal support from his teammates with their second-highest score being 12 runs to Brody D’Agostino.
Leschenault was bowled out for 173 runs with Jason Chappell putting up the figures of 4/26 for the Collie bowling attack.
An opening partnership of 104 between Seth White (49) and David O’Brien (62) gave Collie the perfect start to the chase.
Blair Malatesta (24) and Liam Kinsella (23) also contributed as Collie chased down the total in the 29th over.
Hay Park defeat Eaton
Hay Park pulled off a terrific upset on Saturday when they claimed a win over 2013-14 grand finalists Eaton.
With Phil Coulthard’s 26 runs being Eaton’s highest score the Beavers found it hard to post a respectable tally, being bowled out for 107 runs.
But the Redbacks didn’t chase the total down with any urgency or haste, taking them nearly to the end of the innings to claim the win.
Brendan Jones top scored for the Redbacks with 54 runs coming from 140 deliveries as his side chased down the total of 108 in the 43rd over.
The Redbacks now move to a 2-2 record while Eaton remains without a win on a 0-2-1 record.
