Advocates for the deaf community are concerned Auslan sign language courses will be shelved by Canberra Institute of Technology, the ACT's only course supplier.
Former CIT Auslan co-ordinator Mandy Dolejsi said Auslan is not readily available in the territory.
She lives with her deaf husband, Ivan, who she learnt sign language to communicate with more than 30 years ago.
Mrs Dolejsi is one of just two interpreters in Canberra and worries for its future if she retires as there would only be one qualified interpreter left.
"I've always had this feeling that they [CIT] wanted us gone," she said. "It's the funding of it that's the problem.
"One of the reasons we've had such an issue with getting enrolments, they faff around at this time of year so the marketing doesn't get done to advertise the course."
CIT initially declined to comment on whether Auslan courses would be run in 2015.
A spokeswoman later told the Sunday Canberra Times shortly afterwards Certificate III in Auslan would run in 2015 alongside adult education classes in Auslan, which do not provide accreditation.
The spokeswoman said CIT was not aware of other providers in the ACT.
Mrs Dolejsi said the "numbers focused" CIT could still cut the course if they don't get enough people to enrol.
"The deaf community in Canberra need health and support workers who can communicate with them," she said.
Mrs Dolejsi said she pushed for CIT to merge Auslan with other courses on offer.
"I want someone to be able to come and learn Auslan as well as their psychology degree, or nurses to come and do Auslan, so when a deaf person goes to hospital their family doesn't have to sit there 24 hours a day to communicate for them."
DeafACT president Greg Ophel feels more needs to be done to incorporate Auslan into the community.
He said it was disappointing CIT did not run Certificate I and II in Auslan as a pathway for potential Auslan interpreters.
"We are desperate to have more interpreters and people to understand Auslan better in Canberra," he said.
A petition will be presented to the ACT Legislative Assembly on Tuesday with support from Brindabella Liberal MLA Nicole Lawder.
