RECENT Mandurah Catholic College graduate Nick Lacey is up for the best documentary at the Bond University Annual Film and Television awards.
Eighteen films by 15 students were shortlisted for the awards.
The winner of the best overall filmmaker category will receive a full scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University on the Gold Coast.
The 18-year-old made a film, Pursuit of Light, as part of his year 12 media class.
The film is about former professional boxer Riccardo Monteleone and his fight against a 30-year-old muay thai champion.
The film shows the blood, sweat and tears Monteleone puts in to come out of retirement for one last fight.
Monteleone loses more than 27 kilograms and the story depicts the hard work he puts in for the fight.
Lacey said he always wanted to be a director.
“I got home at 5am a couple of times, but at no stage did I feel tired,” he said.
“The first time I got my first mobile phone I used to take videos with the camera function.”
“I am so honoured and grateful to be flown out to the film festival – I have so much respect for the film industry to do that.”
