MORE than 10,000 people could flock to the shores of Bunbury for a weekend of extreme sports including motocross, BMX riding and water skiing after the City of Bunbury passed a proposal to host the Action Sports Games next year.
Mandurah hosted the games for several years but the construction of a bridge in the water arena means event organisers have looked to Bunbury to host the games.
Boasting worldwide television coverage, with more than 10,000 spectators as well as 350 competitors and their staff, ASG organisers are asking the City for $300,000 over three years to host the games in Bunbury from 2016-18.
But some councillors were concerned at the sum of money being asked for after the City was attempting to “tighten their belts”.
Councilor Steele said she wanted to support ASG in Bunbury but with such small funding allocated in the budget, she said other events could suffer.
“I really want to support it but I am concerned with the money,” she said.
“Committing to this is too steep, especially if we are tightening our belts.”
Early plans could see water sports held in the Koombana Bay and others at Bicentennial Square.
