BASKETBALL: The South West Slammers men’s side started the 2015 State Basketball League season on a high, winning both of their round one games.
An even spread of points contributions along with strong rebounding efforts set the Slammers apart from the Geraldton Buccaneers and Lakeside Lightning.
Ty Harrelson and Brian Voelkel led the charge for the South West, putting up big numbers to give their side the perfect start.
Against the Buccaneers, 16 three-pointers and a nine-rebound lead in the category saw the Slammers take out a 118 to 112 win.
In his first game in a Slammers uniform, Voelkel dominated posting a triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and a huge 20 rebounds.
Harrelson also threatened a triple-double finishing with 26 points, six assists and eight rebounds.
Tre Nichols and Clive Weeden also put forth strong efforts with 21 points each to see the Slammers to a first-game victory.
In their second bout of round one, the Slammers posted a comfortable 115 to 95 win over Lakeside.
The South West won all four quarters, running the game out as 20 point victors.
Voelkel had another big night on the boards, threatening a second triple-double in as many games after pulling down 18 rebounds to go along with his 19 points and seven assists.
Harrelson put forth a big double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds while Trent Worthington also posted double-digit rebound numbers with 10.
Nichols was again strong for the Slammers posting 26 points to go with four rebounds and three assists while Weeden’s 17 also helped them to the victory.
The Slammers now sit atop the ladder after round one.
The South West women’s side also started their 2015 campaign on a high winning their first game of the season against Lakeside.
Patricia Bright led her side to victory posting a strong double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Deanica McCormick also tallied a double-double banking 15 points and dishing out 11 assists.
For round two, both Slammers side will tackle the East Perth Eagles at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.
