BASKETBALL: The South West Slammers men’s side continued their unblemished start to the 2015 season over the weekend claiming another two wins to move to a 5-0 record.
With wins over the Stirling Senators (130 – 116) and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns (105 – 88), the Slammers now sit two games clear of the Joondalup Wolves in first place.
Another strong spread of contributions from Slammers players saw them claim the first win of the weekend over Stirling, with Clive Weeden, Tre Nichols, Brian Voelkel and Ty Harrelson all pouring in double-figure scores.
It was raining buckets for Weeden who put up a lights-out performance hitting 14 field goals from 15 attempts to finish with 34 points.
Import player Nichols posted another big game with 32 points to go with two assists and three rebounds, while Harrelson flirted with a double-double putting up 23 points and nine assists.
Another dominant performance in the rebound category was produced from Voelkel as he pulled down 20 boards to go with his 11 points.
The Slammers then moved on to make light work of the Eastern Suns in front of a home crowd on Sunday, with five players posting double-figure scores on their way to a 17 point rout.
Nichols posted his third consecutive game tallying 30 points or more with a total 30 points, three assists and six rebounds.
Weeden continued his strong form with 21 points and 13 boards while Harrelson contributed 20 points and nine assists.
Voelkel continued his assault on the backboard with 11 points and a huge 24 rebounds while Trent Worthington pitched in with 11 points.
Next week will see a top against bottom clash with the Slammers men’s side facing the bottom placed Goldfields Giants.
The Slammers women’s side also claimed two wins over the weekend to stay unbeaten.
Their first win came over Stirling with a double-double performance from Patricia Bright seeing her side to a 71 – 62.
Bright posted 12 points and 11 rebounds while Kate Fielding was also damaging with 16 points, three assists and six rebounds.
Deanica McCormick also produced a strong game with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists.
McCormick led the team to victory in the second game of the weekend against Kalamunda, tallying 31 points, six assists and six rebounds as they claimed a close 80 – 77 win.
Fielding was again effective with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Kelly Bastow hit 20 points, lighting it up from three-point range sinking six three-pointers.
Next week the Slammers women’s side will tackle the Mandurah Magic in a top-of-the-table clash.
