IT was a bitter weekend for the South West Slammers as both the women’s and men’s sides went down in games to the Perth Redbacks.
It was a low scoring affair in the women’s game as the Slammers went down by five points to Perth.
Despite a terrific performance from Patricia Bright, a lack of scoring contributions saw the women sent home with a 45 – 50 loss.
Bright posted a big double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds, 11 of them coming on the offensive glass.
Bright was supported by import Deanica McCormick who tallied 15 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds.
But the duo did not receive much in terms of support from their teammates.
Team captain and regular performer Kate Fielding had an off night, knocking down just one of five attempts and putting up two points, two assists and two rebounds.
The women put up just four points in the final quarter of the match and will look to bounce back against the fourth placed Mandurah Magic.
In the men’s game, a monstrous performance from Brian Voelkel was not enough to see the Slammers over the line as they suffered a rare loss.
Voelkel poured in 30 points to go with a massive 22 rebounds (six offensive) and seven assists.
His stellar performance was backed up by 25 points, five rebounds and three assists from Tre Nichols while Ty Harrelson put up 17 points and four rebounds.
Clive Weeden also accumulated a strong stat card with 20 points and four boards.
But the Slammers could not stop Perth star Ray Turner who posted 34 points and 14 rebounds.
The final score read 119 – 108.
Next week the Slammers return home from a three-game road stint and will take on the Mandurah Magic.
The Magic are currently sitting fifth on the ladder while the Slammers still occupy the top spot.
A win would see the South West remain in first position and would advance them to a 13-2 record.
