INVESTING in key transport infrastructure forms a critical part of the Budget with roadworks, footpaths and airport upgrades in the pipeline.
Reconstructing 600m of Koombana Drive and replacing the George Baxter boardwalk are key components of the investment in the city’s transport and pedestrian network.
Total cost of the work is expected to be about $4 million.
The road and boardwalk are in need of urgent works due to erosion.
The City is already exploring plans for major improvements to the main tourist entry into Bunbury.
“The City has responded to the deteriorating state of Koombana Drive and the George Baxter Boardwalk by moving ahead with works on this important asset at the earliest opportunity,” Mr Brennan said.
“It forms just one part of yet another significant investment in the City’s infrastructure that we have an obligation to ensure is maintained to an appropriate high level.”
Major roadworks that form part of a $3.8 million program include the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Jeffrey Road and Vittoria Road and installing traffic lights at the intersection of Sandridge Road and Pennant Road.
Several streets will be resealed while Pennant Road will also be reconstructed.
Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from footpath construction and replacement to the tune of $744,000.
This includes upgrading, replacing and developing new dual-use paths throughout the City.
Bunbury Airport will also continue to undergo major works with $750,000 being used to upgrade electricity services, additional aircraft parking, resealing taxiways and runways, and the access road to the new helicopter rescue base.
Hangar leasing will assist with repayments on the works.
