THE decision to change the zoning on an empty block of land on Clifton Street to allow for development was met with mixed reviews at Tuesday night's council meeting.
While the decision was passed to change the zoning, it was met with criticism by past mayor David Smith and Councillor Karen Steele who said the area should be preserved for future generations.
The site is a reserve bounded by Ocean Drive to the west, Carey Street to the north and Clifton Street to the south.
Council voted for the recommendation to change the land, with Cr Steele being the only one to vote against.
Both Cr Steele and Mr Smith said the land should be preserved and a decision should not be rushed to change the zoning.
However Councillor James Hayward spoke for the decision and said he was looking forward to seeing what changes and developments could come about from the changes.
The site was identified as an area for potential development due to its ideal location.
It is situated about 200 metres from the existing City Centre Zone and in close proximity to recreational and tourism facilities, including the Lighthouse Beach Resort, the Bunbury Runners Club and a recreational park, Wyalup-Rocky Point and the Victoria Street Café Strip.
The land is Crown land with the City currently holding the management order and the power to lease for 21 years.
The amendment has the potential to provide capital income upon sale and recurring rates revenue.
