AN Australind business owner has been assaulted by a burglar armed with an axe after he came to his store to investigate an activated security alarm.
Discount Auto Parts Australind owner Paul Rodgers went to the store on Mardo Avenue to investigate the activated alarm about 4.30am on Monday, November 30.
When he arrived on the scene before police, the burglar struck him in the back of the head with the blunt end of an axe.
Mr Rodgers suffered a cracked skull and required four stitches where the axe hit him, as well as staples in four other cuts on his head.
“Luckily I wasn’t knocked out so I was able to stay upright and then wrestled him,” he said.
“It didn’t last long, only about five seconds.
“I do not think I would be here if he hit me with the other side of the axe.”
Mr Rodgers said the weapon was recovered later on along with the trolley which was wheeled in with the intent of stealing goods from the store.
“We think he dropped the axe outside when he ran towards the medical centre because police found it over that way with blood on the blunt side,” he said.
Mr Rodgers said there had been an overwhelming response from the community.
“We have had a pretty good response from customers and friends and family which makes you feel better but now it is business as usual and you have to move on with these things,” he said.
Mr Rodgers’ wife and son are looking after the store while he recovers from his injuries.
South West Detectives are continuing investigations.
