MYALUP jockey Lucy Warwick has continued to impress racing fans notching up her second country cup win in as many weeks.
The former Australind Senior High School student took home the prize in the $100,000 Albany Cup aboard Zarantz on March 27.
The pair then backed up on Sunday to claim the $120,000 Pinjarra Cup by a neck.
Zarantz’s trainer Lindsey Smith was full of praise for Warwick after her back-to-back victories.
“Lucy is pretty well bred, her mother was a good rider and she is a lot better than her father who was also a jockey,” he told TAB Radio.
When the gates opened on Saturday, Warwick managed to settle Zarantz in the middle of the field throughout the running, working her way up to second on the final turn.
She hit the front early in the straight and employed hands and heels riding to get her mount to the line ahead of a very fast finishing Tower of Lonhro ridden by William Pike.
Warwick said after the race she was impressed Zarantz was able to handle the short turn-around between races.
“He pulled up super after the Albany Cup and it’s a big ask to do what he’s done,” she said.
“I thought her fought on well to claim the win.”
Warwick, 18, is the current face of Racing and Wagering WA and notched more than 100 wins in her first season including a Railway Stakes.
She has since added a Grandstand Cup, an RJ Peters Stakes win and spent time riding in Melbourne.
