Local fitness instructor Emma Hollins is on a crusade to bring fitness to the general public and fight mental illness and depression at the same time with her fitness group, Happy Hitters.
The fitness guru said the project was sparked by the Japanese cultural habit of performing Tai Chi in open spaces throughout the cities.
“I thought it would be nice to bring fitness into the open where people can breathe fresh air,” Ms Hollins said.
“Fitness is important to personal health and to make it affordable to everyone it’s just a gold coin donation so it’s in everyone’s budget and no one feels intimidated by gyms.
“Lack of exercise has been linked to depression and low self-worth, you don’t have to be an athlete to come down and join in, you just have to push yourself, the physical and mental benefits are enormous.”
All the funds raised by the weekly class at the Graham Bricknell Shell are being donated to Beyond Blue to help combat mental illness.
