An Eaton man is encouraging parents to speak to their children about the dangers of fire after an act of destruction left his letterbox burnt out.
Dave Harrison said someone placed a homemade explosive made from sparklers in his letterbox which was left blackened and charred.
Mr Harrison discovered his letterbox had been the subject of the prank Sunday morning but suspected it had occurred Saturday night when he heard a noise outside but didn’t think to investigate.
The device was made from easily obtained household items.
Mr Harrison said he understood it was probably a prank perpetrated by kids, but the risk of the damage it could have caused far outweighed the boyish behaviour of the prank.
“Kids will have done it, it’s harmless enough, but it’s summer and the weather is hot so things are dry at the moment,” he said.
“My letterbox is right underneath a tree and this could have resulted in serious problems.”.
