Local director Michelle Durrant is bringing a satirical comment on the state of television talent shows to the stage at Bunbury Fringe Festival.
Falling to the Top is the directors latest directorial outing and follows the story of a sassy quartet of girls rejected by a reality TV program.
Ms Durrant said the show has been described as a “musical trashtacular” that looks at fame and fortune and the lack of talent needed to acquire it.
“I saw the show back in 2015 and I instantly gelled with it’s feel, the 90s music and its tongue-in-cheek humor really appealed to me,” she said.
“It looks at shows like Australian Idol and pokes a bit of fun.”
The show stars a mixed cast of Bunbury and Boyanup talent including stars Renee Chapple, Taneeka Grant, Ann Cuypers and Holly Prentice who Ms Durrant said came together naturally but very quickly.
“Usually it takes about 6 months to get a show like this together, and I wasn’t really planning to begin another project,” she said.
“But as soon as I heard about Bunbury Fringe I knew this would be perfect and we began production at the end of December.”
As for the Fringe Festival itself, Ms Durrant said she couldn’t be more excited for the new entertainment initiative for Bunbury.
“This has been a long time coming and I think this is going to be a diverse event that people will attend and hopefully becomes an annual date on the calendar,” Ms Durrant said.
Falling to the Top is appearing in the local fringe slot on Wendesday, February 8 and Thursday February 9 in the festival hub located at the Good Earth Surf Shop.
Good Earth owner and operator Zena Holker has been working hard to convert the space behind the store into a relaxed festival zone where musicians, comedians and stage performers can delight audiences.
The festival kicks off in February with events scattered around the CBD at iconic Bunbury locations including the Rose Hotel, Yours or Mine, Maker and Co and this year’s festival hub the Good Earth Surf Shop.
Tickets can be found at bunburyfringe.com along with an official downloadable program with information on all the acts.
