Bunbury residents continue to do the right thing when it comes to disposing of e-waste with the City being praised for sending away more than 5000kg of material for recycling.
The continued commitment by residents towards diverting waste from landfill resulted in 5214kg of items such as computers, televisions and phones being sent to Total Green Recycling for disposal earlier this year.
Equally impressive was the fact that only 103kg of the material was found to be unsuitable for recycling, an effort that earned formal recognition from Total Green Recycling for the City’s “continued support and commitment in dealing with the environmental challenges faced by the people of today, and for taking positive action towards ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come”.
Electronic waste is collected at the City’s Waste Depot on McCombe Road in Davenport where residents can drop off unwanted electrical items for free.
Waste Services manager Aileen Clemens said residents deserved to be praised for their attitudes towards reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
“This dedication was highlighted again only weeks ago when a 16m container full of old computers and televisions was sent to Perth for recycling,” Mrs Clemens said.
“This was the fourth such shipment this financial year and it demonstrates just how committed to recycling the residents of Bunbury are.”
Electronic waste is just one component of the household hazardous waste disposed of by residents at the McCombe Road depot.
The household hazardous waste disposal has been in operation since 2007 with around 1600 tonnes being diverted from landfill.
“The city’s residents diligently trek through the gates on a daily basis disposing of all their household hazardous items, right down to the AAA battery,” Mrs Clemens said.
“City of Bunbury residents should be acknowledged and congratulated for their ongoing commitment in diverting recyclable materials from landfill.”
The McCombe Road depot is open from 7am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. More information about what can be disposed of is available from bunbury.wa.gov.au/Pages/Hazardous-and-Electronic-Waste.
