Steve Grady and Josh Rennie-Hynes are both highly respected solo singer/songwriters in their own right, but coming together to form the Ahern Brothers, their music has reached new levels.
They are storytellers, singers and performers with an incredibly refreshing and cohesive sound, making them some of Australia’s best talent.
And the duo are now preparing for their extensive Good Nights tour throughout WA following the recent release of their first album as The Ahern Brothers.
Grady, said the album came together through documenting their travels and stories throughout the towns and national parks of Northern California and Oregon.
“We’d been playing for a few years, just playing guitar for each other but it wasn’t until last year on a trip to America that we started writing songs together,” he said.
“We really liked what we had created together so we came back to Melbourne and did the record.”
Rennie-Hynes said the transition to becoming a duo felt natural.
“Steve and I hadn’t written anything together before, but as soon as we got to San Francisco we pulled out our guitars, and the songs just came pouring out,” he said.
“We’d wake up, make a coffee and work on writing a song for that day. At the end of three weeks, we had a bunch of material that we were so proud of.”
Describing their sound as “a bit of everything, some Simon and Garfunkel in there”, the boys are hitting the road in WA for a seven-date Good Nights tour across Perth and the South West, and Grady said they can’t wait to play the more intimate, stunning venues as part of Good Nights.
“This will be my first time with Good Nights but Josh has already toured and played for Good Nights before and he’s just raved about it,” Grady said.
“I’m excited to play in different spaces, rather than just the typical bar, and take our music to all different types of places.
“It’s a very listening audience (at Good Nights) so that will suit our music being able to play to a crowd who’s just there to listen to the lyrics and engage in that way rather than sing over the top of a loud crowd.”

The Ahern Brothers will be joined by Perth’s Joel Barker from Joel Barker & The Low Company at Green Door Wines in the Ferguson Valley to kick start their WA tour on Friday, July 28. Platters and drinks can be purchased from the venue.
“We’re just two guitars, two voices and some harmonies,” Grady said.
“We’ve been absolutely stoked how people have been receiving the album and The Ahern Brothers… and I’m just excited for my first time in WA.”
The Ahern Brothers will play a number of shows around the South West during July and August, including the Ferguson Valley, Donnybrook and Bunbury. There are limited tickets available. To get yours, visit bit.ly/alwaysgoodnights-shows.
