South West folk-roots musician Tom Day is looking forward to playing for Bunbury fans.
Day and Jordy Maxwell will perform at the Good Nights Backyard Show on Friday, October 27.
During his conversation with the Mail over the phone, Day radiated a laid back, friendly vibe.
He said he thrived on the spontaneity that Good Nights provided.
“It’s the people you get to play with, it’s just always such a nice vibe...especially the Good Nights gigs Kelsie [Miller] puts on,” he said.
“Being in different places is awesome and playing in places I have never played before is even better, I’ve played Good Nights gigs before but it’s always in a different spot which I love.”
A jam session with sound engineer James Newhouse (The Waifs) and singer-songwriter-producer David Mann led to recently-released single When I Fall’s creation.
The single went on to receive attention from Triple J.
Day noted the track was designed to focus on mental health and relationship issues.
“I wrote it around this time last year, there was a lot of talk about mental health in the music and arts industry and there were a lot of songs out there that were about mental health and I found that they were a bit sad,” Day said.
“Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I thought I would try to write a song about that topic except make it one that makes me happy when I play it and hopefully makes other people happy when they hear it.”
Bunbury marks the first stop on his When I Fall single tour.
The musician’s first nation-wide tour hits Yallingup’s Caves House before travelling to Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
Day then returns to WA in late November and December for shows in Albany, Two Rocks, Perth and Scarborough.
The Margaret River-based musician is making waves in the Western Australian music scene, having supported Morgan Bain and jammed with Kim Churchill live.
Day said it has been a whirlwind experience since his first EP, Searching for Splendour, topped the iTunes Blues charts last year.
“Looking back to before that came out I was playing a lot of pub gigs where I was sort of stuck in the corner where no one is really listening [laughs], you see musicians at pubs all the time that don’t get the respect they deserve,” he said.
“I get to play shows now where I get to play to people who want to come to see me play, it’s very humbling.”
