One Bunbury woman will be shaving it all off to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation and to provide enough hair for a wig. Nancy Iuculano was inspired by her 13-year-old daughter Dani who has already shaved her hair off twice to raise funds.
The personal trainer will have her hair shaved on March 12 as part of the World’s Greatest Shave, which is celebrating it’s 20th year in 2018.
“I originally got involved because I wanted to donate my hair for making a wig and my daughter has donated her hair twice so she has been quite an inspiration for me,” Ms Iuculano said.
“Dani is absolutely stoked that I’m doing this, she’s probably been my biggest fan, which has been awesome.
“I wanted to help out as much as I can and I wouldn’t be able to raise that kind of money any other way.
“Thirty five people are diagnosed each day so it’s quite a big disruption to so many peoples lives and the more that we can do the better.”
Ms Iucalano’s initial fundraising goal was $700 which she has already reached.
“My next goal is $1000 and I wouldn’t mind if I could push that to $1500 – I would be stoked,” she said.
“Anything I can raise from now would be a bonus.
“A big part of what I do for my work is trying to help people so this will be helping someone in a totally different way.
“With the World’s Greatest Shave this year there is a company called Sustainable Salons who will take the hair and make wigs and all the clippings will be put together and recycled to absorb oil spills in the ocean.”
Ms Iucalano will be doing her shave at the Leschenault Leisure with a silent auction and raffle also taking place to raise extra funds. Five dollar shaves and colours will also be available on the day from 4pm.
Dani Iucalano will colour her hair on the same night, while she waits for her hair to grow longer before shaving it again.
Blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer. Money raised during the World’s Greatest Shave goes towards making a difference to families by providing emotional practical support. For more information visit worldsgreatestshave.com.
