Leschenault Recreation Centre is set to see more people using its facilities after the Shire of Harvey approved a tender for extra lighting.
At its ordinary council meeting on March 6, the Shire of Harvey voted in favour of supplying and installing new sports lighting for oval five at Leschenault Recreation Park.
Six tenders and one alternative tender had been submitted to the council prior to the February 28 cut-off date.
The Shire awarded the project to industrial electrical contractor Nites Electrical for its $211,500 tender. The group will install four light towers, holding six lights each, in suitable points around the oval.
The Shire took relevant experience, key personnel skills and experience, tenderers resources, demonstrated understanding and cost into account.
Shire of Harvey manager of community and economic development Patrick Quinlivan confirmed the project would begin within the next two to three weeks.
The project is due for completion in June, expected to cost an estimated $234,000. The Shire has reserved $86,000 for the project while Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault will provide $20,000.
The WA Government will also pitch in, with $78,000 coming from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and $50,000 from the Royalties for Regions Local Projects, Local Jobs initiative.
Shire president Tania Jackson said the lights installation would greatly benefit the community members and sporting clubs.
From our point of view, it is about enabling us to fund this next set of lights. The football club is putting in a portion of that money and the Shire is supporting it, she said.
Its a boon to able to open up this area the lack of lighting alone stops people from regularly using the park.
Weve got nearly 800 young people playing sport in this area so it opens up another oval for us.
The shire met with Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault junior football club on Monday, March 19. HBL junior football vice-president John Harper said the lights would assist the clubs practices this year and into the future.
Its going to be a great benefit for our club, we can use them to utilise a lot more training and night games for the juniors, he said.
The project is going to open up the area for a lot more people in the community and get more kids into junior sport.
