WA iSports inc. is providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some of its members.
A group of 15 WA iSports athletes will embark on a one-week trip to Penang, Malaysia from May 2 to 9, accompanied by carers and a nurse.
The trip, described as a ‘cultural and sports tourism experience’, will see the group share their skills with people with disability and school children in Malaysia.
Thanks to the organisation’s fundraising efforts, the team will be donating sports equipment to multiple schools in the country.
While visiting the Penang Cricket Association, they will also take part in a few games with the locals.
The trip will conclude with a cultural tour of the region.
WA iSports chairperson Allison Burnett said the organisation planned to positively engage with the Malaysian people and learn some new games.
“We’re passionate about providing opportunities for people with disability that are not always accessible to them,” she said. “Our athletes have lots of opportunities that a lot of people don’t have, so it’s good for them to be able to share their skills and understand other people’s experiences in life.”
The team came together at Bunbury Bowling Club last month to discuss the journey.
“Lawn bowls makes for a great place to meet and we really feel welcome here,” Ms Burnett said.
“It was also a really good opportunity to get one of the senior constables along to build relationships with our athletes.
“It provides the opportunity for the police to get to know some of our members and develop an understanding.”
Bunbury Police Senior Constable Neale Horsley provided information on the key laws and the judicial system in Malaysia.
Sen. Const. Horsley said South West police engaged with community groups and provided necessary advice.
“It’s for the group’s confidence. They are going to a foreign country and a lot of them have not had contact with police in WA or other areas,” he said.
“My role here is so that they can feel a bit more comfortable around someone in uniform.”
