A ROADSIDE memorial which paid tribute to two of Bunbury’s well-loved Krikke boys has gone missing and the local speedway community is determined to see it returned.
Jason and Darryl Krikke tragically lost their lives in a car accident near Myalup in 1997 and crosses were erected on the highway soon after.
Bunbury Speedway general manager Andrew Roberts said the crosses had been removed about 12 months ago but had been replaced before the Krikke Boys Shootout in March, which is held in their honour.
While it was not known what has happened to the memorial, Mr Roberts said he was “disappointed more than anything.”
“There is a strong fanbase in the area and there is a chance someone has souvenired the shrine,” he said.
“But people need to remember it is a mark of respect to a tragic loss which has spawned a huge amount of positivity throughout the community.”
Mr Roberts said on the back of the accident, speedway authorities visited about 40 schools a year to teach children about the importance of bike and road safety.
They also run a youth driver development course at the speedway which teaches young people vital skills before they get their licence.
“We are a lot more than just a bunch of rednecks who like racing – we do a lot to improve safety in the local community,” he said.
Mr Roberts said if anyone had taken the memorial and wanted to return it, there would be no legal implications.
“We just want to get to the bottom of this and get it back, no questions asked,” he said.
