CRICKET: It must be the wet season in Eaton because another drought was broken this weekend when the Eaton Beavers Cricket Club claimed their first ever title with a win in the Bunbury Indoor Cricket Centre Twenty20 cup final.
The win comes after the Eaton Boomers Football Club was able to take out their first league premiership in club history just four months ago.
In a game that came down to the final ball of the match, Eaton was able to deny Leschenault the four runs needed to win and put their first piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet.
Eaton was first to bat and after losing the early wicket of Clint Hewson it was fellow opener Arron Quartermaine who stole the show.
The batsman’s knock of 115 from 66 balls including 12 fours and five sixes was the driving force for the Beavers who went on to post a total of 2/187.
Quartermaine received help from James Hillery who was able to score 48 runs from 41 balls while sitting in the passenger seat and Glen Dehring who tallied 16 runs from 10 balls.
At the innings break Eaton looked a sure thing to take home the match and after a pair of early wickets it looked even more certain.
However the Leschenault batsmen were not ready to relinquish the title that easily.
Tim Dyer did his best to help out with 15 but it was half centuries to Dwayne Franklin (57) and Tom Buchanan (53) that kept the Green Caps in touch with the Eaton total.
Chasing 188 runs for the win Leschenault needed a boundary from the final ball and were unable to produce one with Brody D’Agostino being run out as he scampered for runs.
The heartbreaking loss however could inspire a late run at the finals in the 50 over game for Leschenault who defeated Colts on Saturday in a stunning upset victory.
Eaton will take confidence from the win and look to retain top spot in the A grade for the rest of the season going into the finals.
