South West Traffic officer-in-charge Craig Clarke said police need to speak to any drivers who may have witnessed the crash.
Police believe the log-truck was travelling south on the Old Coast Road when the driver spotted the line-marking truck ahead.
As he attempted to change lanes, the was blocked by the gold sedan.
The log-truck then collided with the line-marking truck which was flipped onto its side.
The log-truck caught on fire due to the collision.
Fire fighters had to smash the front window of the line-marking truck to free the driver.
He was flown to Royal Perth Hospital by the RAC Rescue helicopter where he remains in a stable condition.
Police believe the driver of the gold sedan did not stay at the scene.
The driver of the log-truck is believed to be uninjured but shaken by the crash.

ONE man has been airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital after a log truck and line-marking truck collided on the Old Coast Road near Binningup on Wednesday morning.
The crashed caused north and southbound lanes to be closed while the helicopter landed.
Northbound traffic was allowed to continue to travel after about an hour standstill.
The southbound lane remained closed while police and fire fighters attended and assessed the scene.
Police have still closed off the southbound lane to all traffic.
At this stage police have not confirmed if either truck was at fault.
The front window of the line-marking truck was smashed to allow the driver to escape.
The collision caused paint to be spilt in a large puddle across the road.
The log-truck caught on fire which triggered a bush-fire warning, which has now been cleared.
Southbound traffic was redirected through Harvey and onto the South Western Highway.
St John ambulance took the second driver to Bunbury Regional Hospital.
