THE Boyanup saleyard is a big, well-established and vitally important piece of WA infrastructure.
Just how big it actually is, is not something you can really comprehend unless you go there, stand on the walkways and look out over the labyrinth of fences, gates and holding pens.
The saleyard is used often and effectively by cattle farmers from around the South West, both for buying and selling stock.
If a new saleyard is not funded and built when the lease comes up in less than 10 years, those same farmers will face exorbitant costs to access the saleyards at Muchea or Mt Barker not to mention the amount of time the cattle would have to spend on board trucks to get there and in some cases back again.
WA is a huge land mass where farming is a significant and vital industry.
However, without adequate local infrastructure the farmer's job is made even more difficult than it already is.
The best way for the government to support this state and agriculture is to ensure the infrastructure is present for thriving local industries, such as the Boyanup saleyard, so we can continue to support our farmers and maintaining a thriving local food system.
