DONNYBROOK blokes will be getting behind a good cause and growing out their `mo’ in the month of November.
Movember is an annual fundraiser that raises awareness about men’s health issues and raises funds for programs for testicular and prostate cancer and men’s mental health.
From Movember’s perspective, the reasons for the poor state of men’s health include lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face, men not openly discussing their health and how they’re feeling, reluctance to take action when men don’t feel physical or mentally well, men engaging in risky activities that threaten their health and stigmas surrounding mental health.
Local policeman Trent Langthorn is behind the push to get as many blokes involved as possible in raising awareness of these issues. So far 25 men have signed up for the hirsute challenge, but he is hoping to get at least 50.
On November 1 they will start growing their mo, and on December 1 it will come off at a community shave at Salon De Coiffure.
“You don’t have to grow a mo,” Mr Langthorn said. “You can shave it off or colour it, or you can just be an ambassador.”
There will be donation containers around town for anybody who wishes to donate to the effort, or you can donate to the `Donnybrook Community’ team or an individual through the website. Anyone who wishes to participate can go to the website and join the Donnybrook team, or see Trent Langthorn at the Donnybrook Police Station.
“If we raise a couple of hundred bucks that would be great, but for me it’s about getting the community involved in something fun for a cause, and any money raised is a bonus,” he said.
“I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully the community pulls together for a month of laughs and hairy top lips.”
