SAILING: Top WA sailor Darren Smith and WA world champion Josie Mark took out the 2014 Australian Hobie Cat Nationals in Bunbury last week.
Smith and crew member Mark pitted their skills against some of the world's best sailors to clinch the title, ahead of current runners up world champions Cam Owen and Suz Ghent, also from WA.
The four day sailing competition was hosted by Koombana Bay Sailing Club and held on Koombana Bay, widely regarded as having some of the best racing conditions in Australia.
“WA has some of the world's top sailors and the sailing fleet was the best you would get anywhere - it’s the most competitive sailing fleet in the world,” said WA Hobie Cat Association committee member Lucy Bromell.
“Koombana Bay Sailing Club is a fantastic venue for the event and the venue and racing conditions were much appreciated by all the competitors.”
Koombana Bay Sailing Club rear commodore sailing Warren Drew said the event was a great success for the club.
“It was absolutely awesome,” he said.
“It’s one of the most successful championships we’ve ever held at Koombana Bay.”
The club will hold a regatta from February 27 to February 28 where they are expecting over 100 boats to be on the water.
