Mr Ngari moved from Kenya in East Africa to Australia in 2006 and studied accounting and finance at Murdoch University for three years.
After finishing his degree Mr Ngari worked as a finance officer until he embarked on a career change.
Mr Ngari said his job was repetitive and wasn’t what he wanted to do.
Seeking a challenge, the 28-yearold turned to the Police Academy.
In February last year he began his training to become a police officer. Before he came to Collie, Mr Ngari worked from September to November in Midland and in November began working in Kira.
In April this year he moved to Collie with his wife and two-year-old son and he said he felt very welcome. Since joining the police force Mr Ngari said he had enjoyed the physical challenge.
“I was looking for something more physically demanding and challenging,” he said.
“As a finance officer I was always stuck at a desk.”
Mr Ngari described his policing style as one based on mutual respect.
“I’ll treat the people I’m dealing with with respect but I expect to be treated with respect in return,” he said.
Police Sergeant Mike Dean said he was pleased with Mr Ngari.
“He fits in well in the community, and the community are pleased with him,” Sgt Dean said.
“We’ve had fantastic feedback.”
For Mr Ngari drugs are worrying and the ease of which a teenager can get drugs now is too easy, in his opinion.
“It used to be the worst a kid could do is have a puff of a cigarette but now with the drugs out there it really worries me,” he said.
With a child already and another on the way, Mr Ngari had extra incentive to keep the streets safe.
When he isn’t policing or spending time with his family he likes to watch AFL and supports the Eagles, cycles on his bike or plays hockey, and while he hasn’t been taken up by a team yet he hopes to get involved with a local club soon.
Mr Ngari’s goal in Collie is to keep the community a safe place to live.
