TWO Bunbury women who neglected a five-month-old Mastiff puppy to the point it was “screaming with pain” faced Bunbury Magistrates Court on July 6.
The women, Carissa Selena Jocelyn Bonn and Rikki Dana Reeves, did not appear on charges of ill treating an animal.
RSPCA prosecutor Maureen O'Connor told the court on March 6 this year Bonn’s neighbour reported yelping coming from the yard and called the RSPCA to report the distressed animal.
RSPCA officers attended the property on the same day to find a five-month-old male Mastiff puppy which could not be touched or moved without yelping from the pain.
The puppy was reported to be extremely emaciated with severe dermatitis, crusted facial folds and swollen ears and eyes.
RSPCA officers immediately moved the puppy from the premises to a vet.
The vet said the puppy was five to seven kilos lighter than it should have been with a congenital disease called Hyperthyroidism and had spinal fluid leaking into its brain.
Despite giving the puppy injections of antibiotics and pain relief, it was in too much pain and had to be euthanased.
The puppy was sent to Murdoch University for a post-mortem.
It was discovered Bonn was given the dog by Reeves only one week before it was seized.
Reeves initially got the puppy from a breeder “because it was cute”.
Reeves was fined $6000 and was ordered to pay reparation of $798.93 to the RSPCA for veterinarian costs.
She is not allowed to own a pet for the next 10 years.
Bonn will face a trial on October 13 where five witnesses are set to take the stand.
