A SMALL, yet enthusiastic audience gathered at the Donnybrook Football Club rooms last Saturday night to hear two of the state's rising stars of the stand-up comedy world.
Headline act Sami Shah migrated to Australia from Pakistan. Many aspects of that immigration process featured in his comedy routine - not just the whole immigration process, but also a migrant's view of Australia and its people.
He also shared some tales of life on the comedy circuit, especially his many visits to small towns. Tales of his most recent performances in Nannup and Collie were particularly well received. Also popular were his tales of parenthood and of his young daughter.
Before Mr Shah took to the stage it was the job of young Midland-based comedian Cameron McLaren to try and get the audience warmed up and in the mood to laugh.
Mr McLaren has only been on the comedy circuit for a couple of years and is rapidly building a following in Perth, although the Donnybrook audience were a little slow to warm to him.
After the two comedians had finished members of the audience were invited to take the stage and tell a few jokes.
Club manager Dave Wedderburn said events like this are part of the club's on-going efforts to get the local community more involved with the club. He said it helped show people other uses for the club and its grounds than football.
