MUMBALLUP fashion designer Sally Young took her largest collection yet to the recent South West Fashion Festival, held at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.
Ms Young showcased her one of a kind designs, which are all made from silk and Australian Merino wool, at her third fashion week outing. Her wearable art clothes are now Australian made registered, and this time she has made the garments a little more ready to wear.
“The crowds were the best ever, which is great for local designers to help get recognised,” she said.
Ms Young said her design technique was an organic process.
“I find the silks and they’re all vintage silks, each one is different,” she said.
“They inspire the garment, they grow like a tree, from the ground up; I love it because it’s not in fashion or out of fashion - that’s part of my brand, the sustainability of using natural fibres. The garment lasts the test of time; wearable art is about style and not about quick fashion. The beauty about what I do is that each garment has a one off fabric, so each fabric is made and can never ever be repeated. Wearable art has no rules, that’s why I love it - it allows the wearer to be individual and dress for themselves.”
Ms Young is currently building a straw bale studio on her property, and hopes to have an open gallery there.
“I’ve also got overseas prospects and I’ll be pursuing online sales through my website,” she said.
“Sustainability is where fashion is going - it’s currently the worst offender for landfill,” she said.
“I think I’ve found a niche in regard to handmade, to quality, and for people who are becoming more aware of the impact that they have on the earth but still want to look gorgeous.”
