A HEROIC rescue at Dalyellup Beach has seen Newton Moore Senior High School student Sam Russell nominated in the Pride of Australia People’s Choice Medal.
The 15-year-old is a state finalist in the Child of Courage category for her bravery in saving a mother and child from a rip in July.
She did not hesitate when she heard them calling for help, diving into the ocean fully-clothed to bring them to shore.
Sam said she was “really excited” to learn that she had been nominated and she had no idea who put her name forward.
“I’ve never really won any award like this, so it’s very exciting,” she said.
At the time of the rescue, Sam said she was thankful that she had completed her bronze medallion, which allowed her to identify the rip and bring the pair safely to shore.
She plans to refresh her life-saving training in January 2016 and encourages other young people to undertake first-aid and life-saving education.
Voting for the awards runs from Sunday, August 30 to Sunday, September 6.
The winner of the People's Choice Medal will be announced at state Pride of Australia Ceremony, where they will receive $5,000.
