BE active, belong to your community and make commitments to the activities you engage in – that’s the message from mental health advocates in Western Australia this week.
A group of dedicated and passionate community members in Bunbury have organised events to celebrate Mental Health Week from October 2 to 10.
On Wednesday, October 7 the Act-Belong-Commit Family Fun Day and Mental Health Expo at Bicentennial Square took place from 10am to 3pm.
Local organisations were at the expo to offer free information and advice to the community.
There were also activities, food vans and raffles for the community to get involved in.
The Intown Centre, Headspace Bunbury, Life Without Barriers and the South West Womens Health centre were just a few of the local businesses at the expo.
Headspace Bunbury centre manager Nicky Smith said if we keep active, get involved in community life, and do things that give us a sense of meaning we can cope better with problems and stress.
“Most of us think a lot about what we can do to keep physically healthy, but we rarely stop and think about how to look after our mental health," Ms Smith said.
“If we keep active, get involved in community life, and do things that give us a sense of meaning and purpose, we not only feel happier, but we can cope better with problems and stress."
The final event to mark the end of Mental Health Week in Bunbury is on Friday, October 9.
