One day at each port of call is Pirate Day aboard the Duyfken, where visitors are encouraged to join the crew in swashing their buckles and dressing up as pirates.
The troupe couldn’t believe their luck that the ship was in port prior to their staging of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic and stormed aboard in full regalia. They made for the poop deck.
The effect was unnnerving. Amid the ropes and hand-crafted timbers a cast of pirates materialised under a suitably dramatic sky.
The ship’s period displays provided the perfect backdrop.
The Duyfken is in Bunbury at Pilot Jetty at the end of Casuarina Drive until Sunday September 4 when she begins her voyage north to Dirk Hartog Island to celebrate 400 years since Hartog and his crew were the first Europeans on Western Australian soil in 1616.
We had a thousand kids come through last week and we've got a thousand booked this week.
