Bunbury is losing a local icon after the deconstruction of the George Baxter Boardwalk began on Monday.
The landmark was earmarked for removal in April after the City of Bunbury identified it as a hazard and opted for the space to be used for a land-based footpath instead.
The removal of the Koombana Drive boardwalk is part of one of the biggest infrastructure projects carried out by the city in several years, and also includes the construction of a new marine wall; widening a stretch of Koombana Drive; and the construction of two cycleways.
A new roundabout will also be constructed to allow better access to the Dolphin Discovery Centre and the new Department of Parks and Wildlife headquarters.
