The Cats picked up the services of Black in exchange for pick 92 on the last day of the AFL trade period.
Black, 25, was considered a possible recruit for Fremantle but they chased Geelong forward Shane Kersten instead.
Black will have the chance to replace Kersten who heads to the Dockers while Nathan Vardy heads to West Coast.
Black was originally contracted to the Kangaroos until the end of 2017, but requested a trade after a year in the VFL.
EARLIER: Eaton football product Aaron Black has parted ways with his AFL club North Melbourne.
His manager Jason Dover told NAB AFL Trade Radio that while Black is contracted for 2017, he is looking for new opportunities and the Fremantle Dockers might be a good fit.
Black played every game for the Kangaroos in 2014 but only played three in 2015 and none in 2016.

Dover said the recruitment of Jarrad Waite to North Melbourne in 2014, has made it more difficult for Black to get games with his club.
He also said Fremantle were keen on star forwards Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb who signed contract extensions with their respective clubs this week – leaving Black as a possible recruit for the Dockers.

Black emerged on the AFL scene halfway through the 2009 season after spending his early youth focusing on basketball.
After time as a junior with the Eaton Boomers, Black was recruited to Peel Thunder and then North Melbourne with the 25th pick in the national draft.
Black has played 50 games for North Melbourne and has kicked 64 goals.
