Another piece of the Bunbury Waterfront Transformation project was revealed on Wednesday morning with the public getting their first look at the design for the new Koombana Bay pedestrian bridge.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan, Bunbury MLA John Castrilli, South West Development Commission assistant director of infrastructure Ashley Clements and South West MLC Colin Holt attended the unveiling of the new bridge designs which will replace the former railway and current pedestrian bridge.
Mr Clements said the bridge will be a vital link between the waterfront and the CBD.
“As we implement the three stages of this transformation we will replace legacy infrastructure such as this bridge with our exciting and new designs,” he said.
Mr Holt said projects like this really make you appreciate the South West.
“We must keep up the partnerships between this project's key stakeholders because that is how things get done,” he said.
Mayor Brennan said Bunbury residents made it clear that they want and use this bridge when the Public Transport Association closed it in late 2013 and he was glad council was able to make repairs and have it reopened the following year.
“This project is developing well and here today we have another key piece of the jigsaw,” he said.
“The design for the new bridge is creative and practical and will be an asset to residents of Bunbury.”
Artist impressions show the structure has been shaped to evoke the image of a ship's hull, paying tribute to the shipwrecks that are buried under the shores of Koombana Bay.
Creative lighting will be used to illuminate the bridge at night, creating an attractive and safe passageway for locals and visitors to use as they make their way between the city and waterfront.
Mr Castrilli said it was great to see the new piece of the waterfront vision unveiled on another glorious day in paradise.
“This design has a wow factor that keeps in with the style of the vision for this development,” he said.
“It will be a key part of Bunbury’s entry statement.”
