In response to increasing recognition about the health benefits of strength training as people age, Eaton Recreation Centre has launched a series of workshops aimed at promoting mobility and movement in people over the age of 50.
Now underway is a four-week movement and mobility workshop which follows on from the success of a recent effective lifting workshop for older adults.
The workshops form part of the centre’s ongoing Fit Over 50 program and participants can join any time.
During workshops, participants gather for a 15-minute information session with gym supervisor Jessica Fuller followed by a 45-minute supervised practical workout.
During the workout session, participants are guided on correct technique and they learn how to select the appropriate weights for their ability.
Ms Fuller said she hoped to build participant confidence in strength training and develop their general fitness techniques.
“Our Fit Over 50 participants often underestimate their own ability, particularly when it comes to strength training,” Ms Fuller said.
“In our classes we often see participants just going through the motions without really challenging themselves and it’s usually only because they don’t have the confidence or the knowledge to train more effectively.”
Once confidence and technique is improved, participants could begin to realise the myriad of health benefits associated with their training.
“Strength training, mobility and fitness is becoming increasingly important to over 50s seeking to remain independent and enjoy a greater quality of life,” Ms Fuller said.
“Not only is regular exercise and strength training providing physical benefits, many participants enjoy better mental health and the socialisation aspects that group exercise provides.”
