Round the town with Nola

This weekend, Collie will be abuzz with adventurous types when the annual Collie Adventure Race is held. Minninup Pool will be the centre of action, with good viewing points for spectators. It is worth going out to have a look at the changeover from one leg of the relay to the next. To local teams involved, good luck, show the flag for Collie.

Clan gathering

Some of you may remember the Highland gatherings in 2002 and 2003,with the skirl of the pipes and a visit from Nessie. It will be on again this Saturday and Sunday, when Scottish clans will be gathering in Collie for a celebration of music, dance, games and food. There will be market stalls along the aboretum at the Wallsend Grounds, with clan tents, highland games and medieval re-enactments. The Italian Club will be the venue for a Ceilidh on the Saturday night. On Sunday, a cultural taster experience will be on offer at the Harris River Estate. A feature of the weekend will be the visit of the Chief of the Elliot Clan, Margaret Eliot of Redheagh.

Kindy cookbook

Fifty years ago, the first edition of the kindergarten cookbook, Family Favourites, was about to go on sale. It was suggested that the little recipe book, consisting of recipes gathered from those involved with the kindergarten and edited by two domestic science teachers, would make a great Christmas gift. Fifty years on, and the suggestion still holds good, although the profits are no longer directed to the kindergarten. The original book was so successful, two sequels were published, More Family Favourites and Further Family Favourites. The books were consolidated into one, and proceeds went to improving hockey facilities, funding the Cord Blood Fund, causes related to youth. It is available from Reubens Newsagency.

Fiera

Italian culture will be on show at the Collie Italian Club on Saturday, November 4, when the inaugural Fiera is held. In addition to market stalls and car boot sales, there will home made Italian cuisine and Devonshire teas. Pink breakfast

A breakfast fundraiser for cancer will be held at the Colliefields on Saturday, October 28, so mark that date on your calendar. There will be raffles and lots of prizes donated by local businesses for this good cause.

Safety art

The Road Safety Alliance is running an art competition for its 2018 Road Safety calendar. You can enter any artwork which focuses on road safety, from children’s drawings to adults’, photographs (or artwork). The art needs to be in a landscape format,, and if emailed, at least 1mb in size. You can post entries to PO Box 21, Collie, by November 30, or email to info@industryroadsafety.com.au Winners will receive between $500 and $100.

Halloween megadance

Collie PCYC is organising a Halloween megadance night for kids on Friday, October 27. Primary school children are catered for at 5.30pm, with a non-flash show, and high school students from 7pm. Canteen facilities available.

Back to Worsley

The annual Back to Worsley day is on again on Sunday, November 17. Morning tea provided by the Friends of Worsley at 10.30am, church service and mass in St David’s at 11.30am. Bring your own picnic lunch.

Museum

There is still a lot to be done organising material for the Collie Museum. The Museum records the history of Collie and its people in all its many different facets. One of the characteristics of Collie is a fine record of volunteering. If you would like to help, contact Tania to find out what is involved.
