Samantha Hickey spends her days embodying an Australian animal and bringing joy to families across the country.
Hickey is the puppeteer for mischievous wombat Mothball in the stage adaptation of Jackie French and Bruce Whatley's acclaimed children’s picture book Diary of a Wombat.
The Go For 2 and 5 Diary of a Wombat tour is heading to the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on November 6 at 6pm and November 7 at 11am.
The story revolves around naughty wombat Mothball’s chaotic search for food and shelter.
The show incorporates puppetry, a live cello score and award-winning theatre company Monkey Baa’s unique designs.
Hickey admitted children were wholly different audience members compared to their adult counterparts.
“There’s definitely no filter with kids...some kids take a while to warm up to stories but children have this freedom of speech and this ability to suspend disbelief,” she said.
“Doing a whole show with kids, in particular, that has a musical soundtrack, as opposed to any other traditional form of storytelling, is really a unique thing about the show.
“The composer has done a beautiful job in trying to represent a whole bunch of different emotions and activities with the wombat through music.”
