Two spectators were injured by a stray tyre or tyre fragment which jumped the safety fence at the Newcastle 500 Supercars race on Saturday morning.
The accident happened near Nobbys surf club after two vehicles in the V8 Ute series collided during qualifying shortly after 9am.
A witness said a tyre had bounced over the safety barrier and hit a man and a woman near the track.
The witness said both people were treated by paramedics and taken away in an ambulance.
The male spectator suffered a suspected broken leg, while the female is believed to have a minor ankle injury. Both patients were from Newcastle.
A spokesman for Supercars said the man and woman were taken to the track medical centre and were in good spirits.
He said the tyre dislodged from a competitor’s vehicle in the V8 Utes Series.
