A case of a missing gravestone has the residents of Snake Valley outraged.
One of the oldest headstones at the Carngham cemetery disappeared in recent weeks, belonging to a young woman called Bridget Wyatt, who died in 1859 aged 31.
Snake Valley and District Historical Society president Pat Yeoman said Mrs Wyatt’s gravestone, which was in perfect condition, marked where many of the district’s first settlers were buried in unmarked graves.
“We feel like we’ve lost a piece of our history,” she said.
“It is a beautiful headstone, the carving would have been done by hand. I find it hard to believe anyone would take it.”
Mrs Wyatt, who married a local storekeeper, has no known living relatives, so her grave was trusted to the care of the cemetery’s trustees.
Police are investigating and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Alternatively, message the Snake Valley & District Historical Society on Facebook.
