The community in Collie-Preston celebrated Youth Week after the region received two grants.
The Shire of Capel received $1,000 to hold a series of workshops including a special effects film and stage makeup course and a Door Wide Open drug education talk.
Further north, the Burekup and Districts Country Club was awarded $1,500 for a youth art project to install art on town bus shelters, including improvements to the town’s skate park.
Mick Murray MLA said it was pleasing grants had been allocated to two groups in his electorate.
“The special effects workshop looks like an eye-catching project that will no doubt spark some interest in some of the youth in Capel and engage them with the shire,” he said.
“These kind of projects encourage inclusivity with youth in the community.”
Shire of Capel youth development and communications officer Chloerissa Eadie said the workshop had been very successful in engaging youth between the ages of 10 and 17 to take part in the free activity.
“The youth learnt new skills and followed basic instructions to create wounds and brusies on themselves and their partner,” she said.
“It was great to see lots of new faces taking part in a Capel Youth Collective event and we hope to see many more return next time.
“It was so successful that we are running another workshop with a Zombie theme later in the year.”
