The 28th annual Balingup Small Farm Field Day kicks off this weekend, with the theme behind this year’s show being: “Small farms. Big ideas.”
Gates will open at the Balingup Sports Oval at 9am on Saturday and entry costs $15 for adults. Children under the age of 16 are free, when accompanied by a parent.
The event boasts more than 300 trade and market stalls and will showcase a variety of farm marchinery, agricultural and nursery supplies that are sure to interest farmers and backyard growers alike.
It will also hold plenty of interest for those without a green thumb, with cooking and fashion displays prominent.
The event is organised each year by a group of volunteers from the Balingup community, with profits used to help finance community projects.
Among the highlights each year is the sheep dog trials, which are held slightly away from the main site, between the croquet courts and the South West Highway.
Other attractions include appearances by gardening and sustainability guru Chris Ferreira, who will provide information about sustainable small property management, and from chef Tim Kershaw, who will talk about growing and cooking your own food.
Demonstrations will be available throughout the day in the Demo Tent, including one from Greenbushes local Christine King on making compost and another from Balingup marron farmer John Guest about his experiences with the tasty delicacy.
Tracy Lansdell from Green Tree Naturopathy will offer presentations on native bees and how she creates polinator gardens and artificial nesting habitats.
There are also fashion parades and plenty of kids activities, including the ever-popular animal rides.
And this year’s entertainment line-up includes the Balingup Ukulele Troupe, singer songwriter Cyclone Tess, guitar duo The Howling Monkeys, Bridgetown’s Mary Myfanwy and emerging South-West and singer songwriter Latehorse.
Free parking is available in the paddocks either side the highway, adjacent to the main entrance. No dogs or smoking are permitted at the event grounds. Gates close at 4pm.
